Dear Diary,

15th August - Today was a long day in the mine, starting work at 6.00am and digging all day with a pick and shovel.
We have now dug a vertical mine shaft four meters down and a horizontal tunnel three meters long.
The digging work is very hard, it is hot below the earth and our tools are blunted very quickly by the hard rock as we dig.
It is tedious work and very slow, as we need to remove the broken rock from the shaft with a bucket which is connected by a rope to a pully wheel.
Our digging has now taken four full weeks without a trace of gold, but we will not give up.
I am too tired to write any more at 10.00pm so it is time to sleep and ready myself for tomorrow.
